One of the leading organizations responsible for pioneering methodologies on "how" the CF can accomplish "cheaper, better and faster" training is the
Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) labs.
The Canadian Forces School of Military Intelligence (CFSMI) approached the ADL Lab for assistance with just such a training problem. CFSMI's requirement was to train military members on "How to secure a restricted access area". Currently, this training is done on site with lectures reinforced by practice sessions where trainees walk around a room ensuring all classified materials and information technology are properly secured. The ADL Lab solution was to provide ablended delivery strategy and use the Learning Management System "DNDLearn" (
http://www.dndlearn.forces.gc.ca/) to provide the face-to-face lecture component and a custom designed facility in
Second Life (SL) to provide the learner with opportunity to practice securing a space. What was missing was the reporting and user data tracking between the two systems.
The ADL Lab proposed the development of the virtual world (VW) "Integrated Scheduler" or "iSched" to bridge the gap, and to be packaged with, DNDLearn and SL. iSched permits a trainee to link their SL account with DNDLearn and permits the Instructor to track student progress through SL, track occurrences of events, manage in world exams/tests, allowed for record keeping and schedule students; all of which was automated.
